What is robotic hair restoration?
The ARTAS® system takes individual hair follicles, each having from one to four hairs in it, from the back of your head where the hair is not impacted by male pattern baldness. These follicles are then transplanted one by one into the area of thinning or balding. They start regrowing natural hair.
You’ve heard of follicular unit extraction (FUE), where a doctor performs these extractions and then transplants the follicles.

Using computer mapping, intelligent algorithms, and robotic technology the ARTAS® system takes all of the guesswork out of this process. How does the ARTAS Robotic system compare to other hair loss treatments?
The ARTAS® system moves healthy, growing hair follicles from the back of the scalp (where the follicles are usually not susceptible to male pattern hair loss) to where they are needed. This restores hair growth with actual follicles. Taking medications or applying topical creams cannot even compare for successfully restoring natural hair growth.
At Austin Hair Restoration, our ARTAS® system uses FUE, but it vastly improves upon the manual methods employed by other doctors. Removing and transplanting hundreds, even thousands, of individual hair follicles demands precision to ensure the most follicles successfully take in their transplanted locations. Manual FUE has problems with fatigue, which leads to errors in both harvesting and transplantation. This dramatically lowers the success rate of the transplanted follicles. It’s simply human error, nothing more. ARTAS® uses robotics and artificial intelligence to remove those issues.
Compared to strip harvesting, there isn’t any comparison. Strip harvesting leaves a long, highly visible scar across the back of the patient’s scalp. This scar will never grow hair and will always be visible when the person is swimming or in other situations. Plus, as with manual FUE, breaking the strip into individual follicles demands intensive manual labor and damages far too many hair follicles.
Who is a good candidate for ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration?
Our ARTAS® system is a great treatment for men who have thinning areas or fully bald areas. But you cannot be completely bald, as donor hair needs to be available to be harvested from the back of the scalp.
Otherwise, just about anyone with hair loss is a great candidate for ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration. Certain health conditions and certain medications could preclude a person from being a candidate for this procedure, but we can discuss that will you during your consultation.
How does ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration work?
These procedures at Austin Hair Restoration have three steps: design, harvesting, and transplantation.
The ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration system process starts with the ARTAS® Hair Studio. The system software uses photographs of your head to create a 3D simulation that is then used by your Austin Hair Restoration Clinic doctor to plan out your hair restoration. You work with your doctor to design your personalized hair pattern.
We’ll show you different options that detail various graft counts and hair distribution. The ARTAS® system software algorithms create a natural site distribution that identifies and protects any existing healthy hair and then plots the transplant sites. ARTAS Artificial Intelligence™ algorithms then identify and select the best hair follicles in the donor area to target for harvesting.
Following the restoration plan created by your Austin Hair Restoration Clinic doctor and the ARTAS system software, we move on to harvesting the healthy hairs from the back of your head. The ARTAS® system uses advanced digital imaging to analyze and track each hair. This ensures the donor area will look natural after the hairs have been removed.
The ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration system, under the guidance of our doctors, then gets to work. It identifies and selects the best hairs for harvesting and then the robotic arm does the actual harvesting. This ensures consistency and the highest quality of removed donor hair follicles. The digital mapping in the system provides precise control, far above any manual FUE techniques.
Once all the hairs are harvested, the ARTAS® system holds them and keeps them protected. Next, the ARTAS Recipient Site Mapping technology creates a natural site distribution pattern on the transplant area. It looks for any remaining healthy hairs and identifies them, so they are not damaged. Then the software algorithms plot out the pattern of transplantation.
Now the robotic arm gets to work transplanting the individual follicles according to the exact specifications set by the algorithms. Your doctor dictates hair direction and other variables to ensure the transplanted hair growth patterns will look natural. Unlike a doctor harvesting and transplanting thousands of individual follicles, the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant System robot arm does not get tired. It is completely consistent, and it does not make errors. This ensures the highest number of transplanted hairs will successfully start growing hair where there was none.
That ends the process. In about six months, your transplanted follicles will start growing new hair — natural-looking, permanent hair.
What is the recovery time with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration system?
Unlike strip transplantation, there is no long, painful incision that needs to heal. There is only a little bit of time necessary to let both your donor and transplanted areas calm down.
This takes just a day or two. Patients can then return to work and their normal activities. We’ll give you instructions on washing your hair, but it is usually OK after just three days.
What results can I expect from ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration?
At first your transplanted follicles will shed their hairs. This can be disconcerting, but it is simply the follicles responding to the trauma of harvesting and transplantation. It actually shows that the follicles are successfully taking and continuing with the hair growth cycle.
Within about six months, these follicles will begin returning to the anagen/growth phase of the hair cycle, and you’ll notice new hair developing across your transplanted areas. This will continue, as these follicles are not subject to male pattern hair loss because they were taken from the back of the scalp.

How does ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration compare with other robotic machines?
The ARTAS® system has no match for its capabilities and the quality of the hair transplantation it delivers. You may have heard of certain doctors using a motorized handheld device to harvest, store, and transplant the hair follicles. But the only automated part of these systems is the device that punches out and places the follicles.
There is no 3D mapping, no system software, no AI to designate the best follicles for harvesting — all other aspects of these systems are still manually done by the doctor. Again, as with other systems, this leads to the loss of many potentially transplanted follicles.
What are the risks and side effects with the ARTAS system?
Because there isn’t a long incision, and because the ARTAS® system is automated and precise, these are very low risk procedures. There is a slight risk of infection on the donor area where the follicles were harvested, but all it takes it a little attention to keep things clean.
