How To Know If Your Hair Loss Is Permanent
Unfortunately for many of us, permanent hair loss is a reality we will eventually have to face. Nearly one quarter of the population experience some form of permanent hereditary hair loss. Many of us still associate hereditary hair loss with male pattern baldness but female pattern baldness is nearly as prevalent as the male counterpart. In both cases, it is more likely to become prevalent the older you get.
While some hair loss is permanent, there are many other instances where it’s temporary. With that being the case… how can you tell if the hair loss you may be experiencing is permanent or not?
What Types Of Hair Loss Is Permanent?
There are multiple types of permanent hair loss. One of the most common types is involutional alopecia which is when your hair naturally thins with age as your body spends less time growing hair than it used to while still shedding at the same rate.
What is commonly referred to as male pattern baldness is known as androgenetic alopecia. Another form of permanent hair loss is scarring alopecia. This is when a skin condition that causes scarring like acne or cellulitis damages your hair follicles.
Can Stress Cause Permanent Hair Loss?
There are multiple types of stress-related hair loss, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s permanent. One such type of hair loss is known as telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss is the result of stress pushing your hair into the resting phase prematurely – leading to more hair falling out. While this isn’t necessarily permanent, untreated stress over long periods of time could result in excessive hair loss.
Trichotillomania is another type of stress-related hair loss. In this instance stress is causing the person to pull their own hair out. As mentioned earlier, scarring can cause permanent damage to the hair follicles and thus cause permanent hair loss. Though it’s not a guarantee that will happen with trichotillomania, it’s certainly a very real possibility.
And while alopecia areata hasn’t definitively been linked to stress, there are some who claim there could be a connection. That type of hair loss involves the immune system attacking the hair follicles. If the hair follicles get damaged, it could cause permanent hair loss to the affected follicles.
How Can You Treat Permanent Hair Loss?
One way to treat potentially permanent hair loss is to make sure you have a balanced diet and get a proper amount of sleep and exercise. Your hair health is tied to your overall health.
Avoid hair styles that put a lot of pressure on your hair like tight buns as well. That can cause traction alopecia over time which can become permanent. There are professionals who can provide both surgical and nonsurgical solutions as well.
